June is Men’s Health Month: The Central Jersey Medical Center Wants You to Know that it’s Time to Talk About Screening for Colon Cancer.

June is Men’s Health Month, a celebration of Father’s Day and the men in our lives. It is a time dedicated to raising awareness about health challenges men can face and encouraging them to get screened for early detection and treatment of diseases. One such disease for men that is serious yet preventable is colon cancer, or colorectal cancer. The Central Jersey Medical Center emphasizes the importance of talking about this disease and what we can do to protect against it.

Colon Cancer is a Disease that Deserves Your Attention

In the United States, Colon Cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men. Colon Cancer may begin as small, noncancerous polyps in the colon or rectum, which, if left untreated, may eventually grow into cancer. Fortunately, you can prevent and treat it if it is caught in the early stage.

Even with the known benefits of early screening, many men delay or avoid testing altogether due to fear, lack of symptoms, or the stigma associated with discussing digestive health. Men’s Health Month is the perfect reminder that taking control of your health is not a sign of weakness; it is a decisive step toward a longer, healthier life.

The Central Jersey Medical Center Advises You to Know That the risks for developing colon cancer

· You have a personal history of polyps or bowel disease

· You consume a diet that is high in red meat or processed meats

· You are not physically active

· You are a smoker or engage in excessive alcohol use

Men are generally at higher risk for Colon cancer than women and African American men are at a disproportionately higher risk and lower survival rate, making timely and regular screening even more critical.
