The Urgent Need for Mental Healthcare for Our Youth

The Central Jersey Medical Center recently held a press conference with state and local officials to recognize that mental health challenges among young people in Perth Amboy and surrounding areas have surged, yet access to quality care remains limited for various reasons.

From academic pressures to social media influences and economic uncertainty, today’s youth are facing unprecedented stressors. Through their mental health services, the Central Jersey Medical Center provides accessible, affordable, and effective mental healthcare for young people, which has never been more urgent.

The Growing Mental Health Crisis

According to the CDC, the rate of anxiety and depression among adolescents has risen dramatically over the past decade. Suicide is now a leading cause of death among young people, and many struggle in silence due to stigma or lack of resources. The COVID-19 pandemic only exacerbated these issues, leaving many youth isolated and without support.

Barriers to Mental Healthcare

Despite the growing need for mental healthcare, young people face numerous barriers to receiving mental health support, including:

  • Stigma and Shame – Many young people fear being judged for seeking help, leading them to suppress their struggles rather than address them.
  • Lack of Access – Many communities, particularly in underserved urban areas such as Perth Amboy and surrounding communities, lack mental health professionals who specialize in youth care. The Central Jersey Medical Center’s mental health services are available in their Perth Amboy center.
  • Financial Constraints – Mental healthcare can be expensive, and many families cannot afford it, especially if it is not covered by insurance. This is why the Central Jersey Medical Center accepts most insurance plans including Medicare and Medicaid. Patients without insurance may be eligible for care on a sliding scale.
  • School and Parental Support Gaps – Schools often lack adequate mental health resources, and some parents may not recognize the importance of professional care. The Central Jersey Medical Center’s mental health services are a valuable resource for parents and guardians.

Why Investing in Youth Mental Health Matters

Mental health affects all aspects of a young person’s life, including their academic performance, relationships, and future opportunities. The Central Jersey Medical Center advises that untreated mental health conditions can lead to poor school outcomes, substance abuse, and an increased risk of self-harm. Investing in early intervention and comprehensive care can prevent long-term struggles and improve overall wellbeing.

If you or someone you know is in need of mental health services, the Central Jersey Medical Center is here to help. Dr. Cynthia Vuittonet, Chief Medical Officer and her staff are dedicated to providing critical mental healthcare services for youth from infancy through age 17.
