Central Jersey Medical Center Offers Early Detection Options

During the month of October, our attention is focused on Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is a time to honor survivors and remember those we’ve lost as we support the people affected by this breast cancer. CJMC reminds us that early detection and regular screening can save lives.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime but advances in research, treatment, and awareness have significantly improved survival rates when cancer is detected early.

Signs and Risk Factors

Although breast cancer can occur without these symptoms, it is important to be aware of potential signs including:

· A lump or thickening in the breast or underarm area

· Changes in breast size or shape

· Dimpling or puckering of the skin

· Nipple discharge or changes

· Persistent pain in one part of the breast

A family history or genetic mutations (such as BRCA1 or BRCA2), age, alcohol use, obesity, and lack of physical activity also are a factor. Anyone can be at risk, which is why CJMC stresses the importance of regular screening.

The Benefits of Screenings

As mammograms remain the most effective tool for early detection, CJMC currently offers ultrasounds, 3D mammography, women’s imaging, and related services and recommends the following screening guidelines:

· Women ages 40–44: Optional annual mammograms

· Women ages 45–54: Annual mammograms

· Women 55 and older: Every two years, or continue yearly

If you have a family history or other risk factors, talk with your healthcare provider at CJMC about starting screenings earlier. Contact CJMC today for your screening appointment.
