As the cold weather is upon us the risk of flu and other illnesses we typically see in winter increases. While the flu can be serious, especially for older adults, young children, pregnant people, and those with chronic conditions, many cases are preventable. A proactive approach with Central Jersey Medical Center’s Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Department can help you stay well throughout the winter months.


What is Influenza?

Influenza is a caused by viruses. If you are exposed to an infected person who coughs, sneezes, or talks, respiratory droplets may spread the virus. The symptoms include fever and chills, a cough, sore throat, body aches, fatigue, and headaches. Because flu viruses change from year to year, prevention strategies must be practiced consistently each winter.


Should I Get a Flu Vaccination?

Getting your annual flu vaccine at Central Jersey Medical Center is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and the people you come in contact with. The vaccine reduces your risk of getting the flu and, if you do get sick, the severity of illness can be greatly reduced. It is recommended that flu vaccination from six months of age and older, with only a few exceptions.


CJMC’s Suggestions to Help Prevent Illness, not only in Winter but Year Round

These daily health habits can lower your risk of getting the flu and other winter illnesses:

• Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, using extra caution when in public places.

• Use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available.

• Avoid touching your face, particularly your eyes, nose, and mouth.

• Always cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow.

• Stay at home when you are sick to avoid spreading the virus to others.

• Clean commonly only touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, phones, and keyboards with disinfectant

• Eat a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

• Stay hydrated, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

• Get plenty of sleep.

• Stay physically active.

• Manage your stress levels, as chronic stress can weaken your immune system.
